At 48 × 62 inches, the work has a substantial physical presence. Wolf builds the composition through spontaneous marks, gestural passages and saturated areas of red, yellow, blue, green and violet against the exposed white ground. The scale allows individual marks to function almost as independent forms while remaining part of the larger composition.
Dating to 1983, the painting comes from an important period in Wolf’s early career. The Buffalo AKG Art Museum holds her large 1982 acrylic Artist in the Studio, acquired by the museum in 1983.
